Is Japan right to release the Chinese captain?

Japanese prosecutors announced that they have decided to release a Chinese sea captain who has been in Japanese custody since a ship collision in the East China Sea, amid escalating tension between the two nations. "We decided it was inappropriate to continue the investigation while keeping the suspect in custody any further, considering the future of the Japan-China relationship," an official from the Okinawa prosecutors' office said at a hastily called press conference Friday afternoon.

  • Japan did the right thing to release the Chinese captain, who should have been released much earlier. Japan must have interpreted China not sending their equivalent of the Coast Guard to patrol the island as a sign of weakness. And it, perhaps, is a good time to join the chorus of Asian nations who had territorial dispute with China to stand firm to China. I thought Japense understands China and Chinese mentality. There is a Chinese saying - don't corner a tiger against a brick wall. Well, they lost big this time!
